October 2013 IHSW 2

Despite not starting on my stitching until Saturday afternoon, I had a very productive hermitting and stitching weekend.  I got a good deal done on the Santa ornament.  I decided to do the background of the Santa in half stitches, which gives it a nice dimensional effect.  I can hardly wait to do the backstitch on this, because Santa's face is adorable.

Santa and Reindeer Ornament (Margaret Sherry)
Stitched over two on 32 ct. beige evenweave.
Happy Stitching!

  2. You're so right about the half stitches - didn't know that they could give a 'raised' effect. Now I know...:D

    1. Hi, Zurainny. I have done this before on a very large owl I stitched several years ago. It was actually charted that way, and I loved the effect. This time, in addition to using half-stitches, I also used only one strand of floss for the half stitches, so it muted the background even more. Another way to make the foreground "pop" is to use full cross stitches, but use just one strand of floss. Half stitches are much faster, of course, if you're pressed for time and like the effect. :o)
